Exploring Student Perceptions of Behavioral, Cognitive, and Emotional Engagement at the Activity Level in General Chemistry

Although active learning strategies are being incorporated into many higher-education STEM courses, not all students benefit from these activities to the same extent. As types of designed engage in their learning, differences student engagement may explain some outcomes. However, before can be meaningfully measured using a self-report survey, it is important evaluate if perceive similarly literature definitions on which measures based. Therefore, this study sought explore students’ perceptions behavioral, cognitive, and emotional dimensions with respect specific worksheet general chemistry course. This was completed through use open-ended written responses interviews. Results indicated that although generally perceived dimensions, tended conflate ideas behavioral cognitive engagement. Additionally, social themes were also discovered threaded throughout three engagement, suggesting presence dimension when considering at activity level.
